I’m thrilled to say I actually made a piece of art this year! Look at me go.
This is the beginning of a new series titled That Face When…
The moment I saw Ms. Clinton make this face, I knew I wanted to do a series of powerful women with “that face.” The face women make when they just have to sit there and let a man get it out of his system.
We all know that look and can spot it in another woman from a mile away.
That Face When… I is that moment when Hillary Clinton is being interrogated for 11 hours by the literal patriarchy. She has to put up with yet another pointless interrogation with grace and patience. Anything less and she will be attacked as too emotional or as a bitch. She absolutely cannot point out the money spent trying to constantly discredit her.
Women, even powerful women, aren’t allowed to show frustration or anger. They aren’t allowed to snap at their interrogators and ask belligerent questions. They can’t risk seeming unstable and illogical.
The patterned paper represents the need for women to make their anger pretty and palatable for society to digest.
We’re supposed to stay in our place, disappear, blend into the background. We must be lady like at all times. So we freeze our face and stare off in the distance, trying to figure out how this is real life.
I actually finished two pieces today. I’ve had this one ready except touch ups for a few months. It took me awhile to decide it was really finished.
