I love the Golden Pond site at Land Between The Lakes.
There’s a bison/elk habitat, a planetarium, hiking trails, a river, and a nice little town named Murray.
I love Murray. Not to live there but to visit for a week or two is just fine with me.
This time I stopped at a health food store, Der Dutch Merchant, for some almond butter and let me tell you, their lemon candies and peppermint bark were so delicious. Everything just had the perfect texture and balance.
I like their little coffee shop, Fidalgo Bay, too. Although, there’s really no room to sit. I did have a lovely chat with a traveling saleswoman who let me join her table. She sells those things to schools that kids sell to other people.
There was an amazing little restaurant, the Brass Lantern, with the best pie. Derby pie, I guess comes from Louisville. It took 2 hours to eat there, but the food was worth it. I’d just bring a very interesting book next time. The website makes it look much posher than it really was. The burger was very good too.
Last year when I was here, they told me the bison were getting their winter shots so I wouldn’t be able to see them. I drove a little down the road and there was a sign that read, “Bison Auction” with the dates. I guess that’s like telling kids the dog went to the farm. As you can see from the photo, I managed to see them this year. They poop a lot.
I didn’t make it to the planetarium this year and I’m sitting here wondering why the heck not. I did manage to head back to my favorite car place to have my transmission fluid checked. I wish I had the link, but I can never remember the name. I just know it is on a corner next to a weird intersection and a gas station. It’s one of those 5 direction intersections. Great place though. Nice people. Also on the same road as the one place to dump tanks. It’s an awful dump site though. No running water. I am partial to the place I fill up my propane tank as well. I can’t remember the name of it either. I hit all three places one right after the other so I know how to get there. I don’t need to remember the names. I should work on my guide skills.

I hiked 3/5 days while I was there, letting the dogs run free since no one else was around. Gunnar ran away every time and ended up waiting for me at the RV. A girl can dream, right? Just kidding….I’d never want Gunnar to actually run away….deep into the forest….never to be seen again….
